Bernheim and Schwartz set to bring beer, history to Morningside

Bernheim and Schwartz, the restaurant that will soon open at 2911 Broadway, where Havana Central used to be, is looking to “infuse some warmth and a sense of brewing history,” according to owner Jon Bloostein.

The Morningside Heights eatery will differ from the mini-chain of Heartland Brewery brewpubs  that Bloostein also owns, and will be more akin Flatiron Hall and Houston Hall in Manhattan.

The restaurant, which Bloostein says will open mid-month, adapts its name from a well-known Upper Manhattan brewery from the turn of the 20th century—Bernheimer and Schwartz. The brewery used to be at 1361 Amsterdam Avenue, between 126th and 128th streets.

Part of the job Bloostein sees his restaurant doing is bringing to light the history of beer-making businesses from the early 1900s.
